Maker of the Month: Nick Slaton
Each month the Art Spot Silverthorne Makerspace is highlighting a Maker of the Month to showcase the talented artists and creators in our community.
From a young age, artist Nick Slaton has had a deep passion for the arts, with music being at the core of it. "As far back as I can remember, I've had a pair of drumsticks in hand, turning everyday household items into makeshift instruments. Growing up with a highly creative mother, who has a diverse range of talents—from ceramics to stained glass—I've always been surrounded by artistic expression. Over the years, I've explored various mediums myself, including resin, leatherworking, and woodshop projects, even building a couple custom drum sets," says Nick.
At the Art Spot, Nick enjoys having access to all the tools he needs in one place, along with the space to create. "In Summit County, where garage and workspace limitations are common, it's a real advantage to have room for larger projects. I also truly appreciate how supportive the Art Spot staff is—they're always helpful when it comes to finding the right tools or offering advice on best practices."
As he continues to learn new art skills, Nick says he is excited to explore some of the woodshop equipment he hasn't had the chance to use yet, like the wood lathe and the Glowforge.
When not creating at the Art Spot, Nick works as a ski patroller at Copper Mountain, where he also serves as a dog handler for both the resort and the county. In addition, he is a musician with a focus on drums, who has been playing in bands since high school, including a few local groups here in Summit County over the years.
In the future, Nick hopes to build more snare drums and percussion accessories—maybe even making his own drumsticks on the lathe.
