Mountain Lion Activity

There have been several reported mountain lion encounters in our community in recent weeks. Please follow the tips from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) for living in mountain lion territory:

  • Keep a close eye on your pets when outside and bring them in at night.
  • Use a leash to keep your pet close and under control when recreating or walking outside.
  • Make noise when coming and going during dusk and dawn when mountain lions are most active.
  • Install dark-sky compatible motion-sensor lighting (keep your close neighbors in mind!).
  • Landscape to eliminate hiding spots.
  • Avoid planting vegetation that attracts deer and avoid feeding wildlife or using bird feeders - feeding one species will bring the entire food chain.
  • Talk to children about mountain lions and teach them what to do if they meet one.

If you have questions or concerns about mountain lions, or would like to report a mountain lion sighting or encounter, please contact the local CPW Office at 970-725-6200. It is important that CPW is notified of a mountain lion sighting or conflict immediately. The sooner a wildlife officer knows of a sighting, the sooner they can start monitoring the lion and their behavior.

Pack in the beautiful views by packing out the trash and leaving a place better than you found it. And make sure to not forget the peels and cores. Just because it’s good for you, doesn’t mean it’s good for the wildlife
