Data security incident with City of Louisville utility billing system
Unfortunately, the City of Louisville has experienced a data security incident with our utility billing system. In the interest of transparency, we're writing to let our utility customers know what happened, and what steps we're taking as a result.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, July 2, an email was sent to approximately 1,000 of the city's utility customers with a PDF attachment which included personally identifiable information — including account holder names, utility account numbers, service addresses, and email addresses — of approximately 2,600 City of Louisville utility customers. No payment account information, Social Security numbers, passwords, or other high-risk data was exposed.
This incident was NOT caused by a cyberattack or any breach of our secure systems, but rather by an unfortunate administrative error on the part of the City's utility billing vendor. Nonetheless, we have temporarily deactivated our online utility billing system. The City of Louisville takes data security extremely seriously, and we are actively engaged and working with our utility billing vendor to determine what actions are necessary to fully protect customer data moving forward.
No action on your part is required at this time. We'll reach out with additional information, including when access to online utility billing accounts is restored, as it is available. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please reach out to us at Info@LouisvilleCO.gov. We appreciate your patience as we work to resolve this issue and provide additional information to impacted customers.
