 A beloved Louisville tradition returns
Friday, Dec. 6 | 5–7 p.m. | 1001 Main St. Join the Museum before the Parade of Lights as we spread holiday cheer with free treat bags for children—while supplies last!
For decades, from the 1920s to the 1980s, Louisville organizations handed out these festive sacks, filled with an orange, shelled nuts, and ribbon candy. For many kids, these treats were the highlight of their holiday, especially during the Great Depression when they might have been the only gift received. Come celebrate the season with us and thank you to the Louisville History Foundation for helping keep this tradition alive!
Get a behind the scenes look!
During the Museum closure Dec. 9–14, visitors to the Louisville Recreation Center pool will get a chance to see Museum staff and volunteers working behind the scenes to clean and preserve the 100-year-old Rex Theater curtain in one of the adjacent rooms. In 2016 this curtain was voted one of the top ten most significant Colorado artifacts by Colorado residents and History Colorado! Feel free to watch the action and come back to visit the Museum when we reopen on Dec. 17.

Learn to hand mend and embroider for the holidays
Feeling thrifty? Louisville residents from earlier days made the most of their clothing and fabrics. Kristen Poppe will show you how to use decorative stitching and embroidery to mend and repair clothes and textiles in this workshop on Dec. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Louisville Public Library. We’ll use these skills to make small potpourri sachets for the holidays. Space is limited, please register!

 Happy Holidays from Louisville!
This photo shows a Louisville Christmas tradition from the past that would not be practical today: setting up a Christmas tree in the middle of Main and Spruce!
This tradition reportedly began in 1929 when Louisville was much smaller, only around 2,000 residents. That year a tall decorated and lit pine tree was set up at the intersection of Main and Spruce. Even though there was much less traffic than nowadays, residents remember several people driving into the tree, which had to be straightened and redecorated multiple times!
This photo circa 1949-1955 may show one of the last times this tradition was observed, as it was determined to be too much of a traffic hazard in the early 1950s and no longer put up.
The photo shows Louisville's Main Street looking south with the Bug Dust Pool Hall shown on the left at 916 Main.
