Annual fire hydrant flushing to begin Sept. 16
Louisville's Public Works Department will begin annual fire hydrant flushing on Monday, September 16, 2024. Flushing is expected to be completed on or before October 22, 2024. Flushing will take place only in certain neighborhoods, outlined in red or black on the map below.
The City has implemented unidirectional flushing (UDF) guidelines developed by the American Water Works Association. The benefits of following these guidelines are that it minimizes the potential of rust & sediment reaching the customer. The flushing operation scours & cleans rust and sediment from the water mains and may temporarily discolor the water in the area being flushed. The entire process will take approximately four weeks, but should only affect your house for the day we are in your neighborhood. Residents should avoid washing clothes between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. when the crews are scheduled in the area. We encourage residents to wash clothes in the evening hours or during weekends, as we will not be flushing during those time periods. If your water appears rusty, running a garden hose or sprinkler system for a few minutes will normally clear it up. If discoloration continues, please call the Public Works Operations Division at (303) 335-4750. Thank you for your cooperation during this important maintenance process.
