Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey earlier this spring as part of the Gypsum Creek Recreation Area Master Plan process. Your input was invaluable in helping us understand community priorities, concerns, and hopes for the future of these important recreational spaces.
After reviewing the survey results, we heard you loud and clear: concerns about taxes and the rising cost of living are top of mind for many in our community. As a result, we are pausing efforts on the funding measure at this time to allow for additional community outreach and engagement and a thoughtful reevaluation of the project’s direction, costs and timeline.
We wanted to share some of the highlights from the Gypsum Creek Recreation Area survey that have helped guide the Council’s decision-making on the master plan process. The survey received 386 responses from a strong cross-section of our community. We believe that the survey’s results represent the different parts and demographics of the Town.
The survey reflected broad support and confidence in our community’s future and trust in our Town’s leadership. Over 64% of respondents feel the Town is either on the right track (45%+) or shared neutral views (19%), while fewer than one in five shared concerns about the town's direction. Nearly 58% of respondents said they approve of the job that Council and staff do managing the Town, while 64.5% expressed confidence in how the Town manages your tax dollars. This feedback inspires us to keep listening, learning and improving the town’s services, operations and facilities together.
The survey also asked about the top issues facing Gypsum. The top issue, at about 25% of responses, is growth and overcrowding. This concern was echoed in other responses in the survey. This is why the Town of Gypsum has prioritized and invested in several major capital improvement projects over the past few years, aimed at expanding and upgrading infrastructure and roadways to better manage current demands and support future growth. The Town Council is also actively pursuing open space and conservation easement preservation of key properties that enhance Gypsum's small-town appeal and agricultural heritage. Other leading concerns identified in the survey included the availability and affordability of housing, as well as taxes—particularly property taxes and the impact of recent reassessments.
These responses, along with the feedback shared by hundreds of respondents, has been shared with Council and staff. It’s a valuable tool that will help our decision-making on the Gypsum Creek Recreation Area Master Plan and other issues being addressed by the Town. Feel free to review the survey results by visiting www.gypsumcreekmasterplan.com. You can also review information about the master plan on that website. We will be updating that site as we move forward on this project.
While long-term planning remains important, we also recognize the urgent, near-term needs at the Gypsum Creek Golf Course — especially the clubhouse and pool, which are in significant need of maintenance and repair in order to continue serving the community. Over the coming months, the Gypsum Town Council and staff will take a fresh look at how best to address these important maintenance issues while being mindful of community concerns.
We are committed to keeping you informed throughout this process and will continue to seek your input as we explore practical solutions that reflect the values and needs of Gypsum residents.
Thank you for staying engaged and helping shape the future of our town.
