DORA: 2025 Mandatory Continuing Professional Competency Requirements for Addiction Counselors

This is a reminder that there is still time to complete the Continuing Professional Competency (CPC) requirements associated with your Colorado addiction counselor credential. Colorado Statute states that addiction counselors with an active credential must complete CPC requirements before renewing that credential. The next expiration date for the current license/certification period is August 31, 2025.

CPC REQUIREMENTS

When renewing your credential, you will attest to how you complied with CPC requirements for the current license/certification period (September 1, 2023 through August 31, 2025). CPC requirements can be met by one of three methods:

1. The State Board’s Continuing Professional Competency (CPC) program

• Complete the Professional Practice Survey and Self-Assessment.
• Establish learning goals and document them on the Learning Plan.
• Complete 40 Professional Development Hours (PDH) in line with your Learning Plan and retain documentation of the completed activities. No more than 20 PDH may be earned in a single Professional Development Activity (PDA) category.

2. Deem Status

• If you participated in the formalized professional development program of a Colorado state department and that program’s requirements meet the definition of CPC, you may qualify for Deem Status.

3. Active Duty Military Exemption

• If you were called to federally-funded active duty for more than 120 days for the purpose of serving in a war, emergency or contingency, you may be eligible for an exemption from CPC requirements.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

• There is no limit on the number of CPD hours that may be completed online.
• More information on the Board’s CPC requirements may be found at our website: dpo.colorado.gov/AddictionCounselor/CPC.

This is not a notification of audit. Audits of compliance will be conducted following the end of the license/certification period. If a selected licensee/certificate holder does not comply with the audit, disciplinary action for failure to comply with requirements may be considered by the Board.
