Full and provisional licensure applications for mortuary science occupations, including Mortuary Science Practitioners, Funeral Directors, Embalmers, Cremationists, and Natural Reductionists are now open at dpo.colorado.gov.
While licensure is not required until January 1, 2027, individuals may choose to apply early. Full licenses will be valid until November 30, 2027, while provisional licenses will be valid for three years from the date of issuance. Both license types are renewable.
Senate Bill 24-173 established both provisional and full licensure requirements for mortuary science occupations.
For descriptions of each license type, view the Consumer Guide to Death Care in Colorado.
For requirements to apply for each license type, view the Funeral and Mortuary Sciences Licensing Guide.
If you have any questions or need assistance with your application, please contact the Office of Funeral and Mortuary Science Services at dora_funeralhomesandcrematories@state.co.us.
