Dear Electrical Apprentice:
On July 7, 2020, Governor Polis signed Senate Bill 20-120 into law. Pursuant to section 12-115-115(4), C.R.S.:
“On and after January 1, 2021, …An apprentice who has been registered for at least six years, has completed eight thousand hours of practical training, and meets all other journeyman electrician licensing requirements… shall take the Journeyman electrician examination… at least every three years… until the apprentice receives a passing score.”
To ensure compliance, the Office of the Colorado State Electrical Board (‘the Board’) has completed a review of all currently registered Apprentice Electricians who have:
- Been registered with the Board as an Electrical Apprentice for 6 years or more; and,
- Who have not taken the Journeyman’s examination since January 1, 2021.
It does not appear that you have taken the examination as required in the law. You are required to take the Journeyman’s Electrician examination (JW exam) at least once, every three years.
To be eligible to take the JW exam you must have:
- 8,000 hours of experience earned in no less than 4 years
- 4,000 hours of which must be in commercial/industrial work
- For Electrical Apprentices registered AFTER 1/1/2011, 288 hours of classroom education documented with a transcript or similar statement
To schedule to take the JW examination, please visit PSI’s website (the Board’s examination vendor) to register to take the “CO Journeyman Wireman (6 plus Year Apprentice Exam)”.
The Board will be performing regular audits to identify those who have not taken the examination per this requirement, and will continue to follow-up and investigate to ensure compliance.
Pursuant to section 12-115-115(5)(a), C.R.S.:
“… if an apprentice fails to take the license examination… the Board may suspend the apprentice’s registration until the requirements are met.”
NOTE: Compliance with the above requirements is not a guarantee of licensure and does not mean you will be automatically licensed. If you meet the requirements for licensure within section 12-115-110(2), C.R.S. and have passed the examination, you are still required to complete an application for consideration of licensure. You can apply through your online account at DPO Online Services page.
If you are no longer an apprentice or you have taken the examination, or have questions, please contact us at dora_electricalboard@state.co.us.
Sincerely,The State Electrical Board
