Your Shop Registration Responsibilities

Common Practice Advisory: Confirmation of Shop Registration Requirements and Your Responsibilities

Dear Licensee:

Licensed individuals offering barbering, cosmetology, hairstyling, esthetician, or nail technician services operating out of their homes, permanent, temporary or mobile locations, or salon suites must have a shop registration to be in compliance with the law. The Office of Barber and Cosmetology Licensure is aware that many licensees may not be aware of this requirement and is issuing this advisory as a reminder.

It is a common misconception that registering your business or your company name with the Secretary of State satisfies your obligation to legally operate a barber or beauty business in Colorado.

Please be aware that multiple licensees may operate individual booths or within other rented spaces as long as it is operating as a single facility with one shop registration issued for that address.

When the public enters through separate exterior entrances to gain access to an area where the licensee provides services, such areas are considered separate places of business, and each individual, single salon/spa requires a shop registration (i.e. salon suites).

Licensees providing services for a single individual in a client’s residence or a client’s place of work do not require a registration.

If you need to register your shop, you may not do so through your personal license account. You must create a separate account for your business. All applications require the name and physical address of the business, as well as the business owner’s Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN).

To check if your business registration is active:

Please visit the online portal or log into your account.
If the registration says ACTIVE with an expiration date of Nov. 30, 2025, no further action is necessary.

To apply for a new registration:

Complete an original registration application through the online portal.

If your business registration has expired:

Please complete a reinstatement application.

To verify if your place of employment is registered:

Please visit here and check to see if your business’ registration is posted.
Talk to the business owner, if possible, to alert them of this requirement.
