The Division of Professions and Occupations has received reports of a scam where licensees are being contacted by an individual stating their license has been suspended for drug trafficking and money laundering. The call comes from a number that caller ID identifies as DORA/Department of Regulatory Agencies. The caller states that the individual has been immediately suspended from practicing due to an ongoing FBI investigation on drug and money laundering charges. The caller will then transfer the licensee to a “secure line” supposedly with an FBI agent. The caller will also provide a letter with a forged staff signature verifying the suspension to the licensee.
Some items to look out for to identify this scam include:
- Licensees will not receive a phone call as a first notice of suspension. Initial communication will come via a certified letter from DORA.
- Caller ID will not identify communication coming from the Division of Professions and Occupations as coming from an individual board.
- The Division of Professions and Occupations will not connect you to a secure line with the FBI.
- The letter provided by the scammer contains several grammatical errors.
