Dear Licensee -
The purpose of this message is to provide important information about the status of your occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant license. We understand having clarity and information surrounding the status of your license is important to you and your practice, and we want to take this opportunity to explain the current licensure situation as it pertains to recently adopted legislation and the Division of Professions and Occupations’ authority to continue operating the occupational therapy program.
DORA’s position on HB20-1230 (Sunset Occupational Therapy Practice Act) is that the bill’s requirements took effect on September 14, 2020, and is the State’s current law. Furthermore, the State Attorney General’s legal opinion has confirmed that HB 20-1230 took effect on September 14, 2020 and that the regulation of occupational therapists remains active with no repeal or lapse in the program.
Although licenses are currently scheduled to expire on December 31st, the Division will extend the current renewal period to March 31st, 2021, meaning your license term will be extended to March 31, 2021. This action is being done based on the recent legal opinion provided to the Division, which also gives additional flexibility to existing licensees during this time period. The division anticipates opening renewal for licenses upon application for the usual two-year period in late February. Please be assured the Division will take the necessary steps to ensure you are provided ample opportunity to renew your license prior to the new expiration date.
