Greetings from the Division of Professions and Occupations:
The Office of Barber and Cosmetology Licensure wants to ensure businesses and licensees are appropriately licensed and registered in Colorado. From Oct. 1, 2018 through Nov. 30, 2018, any unregistered business currently offering barbering, cosmetology, hairstyling, esthetician, or nail technician services can register without penalty as we focus on ensuring consumer protection.
How does this affect you?
As a licensee, you are required to work at a business that is registered with the Office of Barber and Cosmetology Licensure. We are asking for your help because your place of business may need to take advantage of this one-time grace period. Registering helps improve consumer protection by providing the opportunity for your customers to look up a business on our website, and make a more informed choice about where they want to purchase services.
Will unregistered businesses face penalties if they come forward and register?
No. If an unregistered business comes forward from Oct. 1, 2018 through Nov. 30, 2018, the Division will waive any accumulated penalties. This grace period applies only to business registrations and is available regardless of the length of time or reason for not previously registering.
How can you help?
-
Look up a registration to see if your place of business is registered.
- Check with your business owner to see if a current, active registration is posted. If the posted registration says ACTIVE with an expiration date of Nov. 30, 2019, no further action is necessary.
-
If no record is found online, or the business has never held a registration, it must apply for a new registration by completing an original registration application through the online portal.
-
If the registration status is expired, the business must complete a reinstatement application.
- All applications require the name and physical address of the business, as well as the business owner’s Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN).
- Tell your business owner/employer about this one-time grace period, so he or she can get registered.
Who needs to register?
Permanent, temporary, mobile and home-based businesses all need to register with the Office of Barber and Cosmetology Licensure. Licensees providing services in a client’s residence or a client’s place of work do not require a registration. Only one registration is required for businesses where multiple licensees are operating individual booths or other rented space under a single business entity.
