New This Year: Statewide Housing Needs Assessment Release
Each year, the State Demography Summit follows the office’s annual release of updated population, labor force, and housing data, providing a first look at the state’s official population estimates and forecasts.
This year, the Summit also follows the release of Colorado’s first Statewide Housing Needs Assessment.
This report, required by Senate Bill 24-174 to support sustainable affordable housing, provides an in-depth analysis of Colorado’s existing housing stock to identify current housing shortages and forecast future housing demands.
Lead author Heather Jones, Housing Economist with the State Demography Office, will share the first comprehensive overview of the analysis during her Summit presentation, including:
-
Market-rate demand analysis: How many homes would be occupied at market prices?
-
Cost-burdened population: How many renters and owners are spending more than 30% of their income on housing?
-
Shortfall: How many households are doubled up that would otherwise prefer their own homes?
Then, during the afternoon Q&A panel, Ms. Jones will join Greg Totten, SDO Labor Economist, and guest speaker Hanna Scovill, Vice President and Senior Economist for Pacey Economics, to discuss how Colorado’s housing and labor markets influence the state’s competitive climate.
