Changes in Colorado's Population Age 60 and Older
Colorado is in the midst of a demographic transition. While Colorado is still one of the youngest states in the country, its population of older adults is increasing rapidly.
Based on the American Community Survey, the percentage of Colorado’s population age 60 and older increased from 13 percent in 2005 to 22 percent in 2023. The state with the largest percentage of persons age 60 and older, Florida, saw an increase between 22 percent in 2005 and 29 percent in 2023.
In 2023, the population 60 years and over in Colorado surpassed 1.3 million, and is expected to grow to 1.5 million in 2030. In 2022, the population 60 years and over exceeded the population under 18 years, and the gap is expected to increase through the year 2050.
