The U.S. Census Bureau released estimates of the July 1, 2024 population for the nation and states on December 19, 2024.
The estimated July 1, 2024 population of Colorado is 5,901,339, which is an increase of 56,154, or 1.0%, from the vintage 2024 July 1, 2023 estimate. This is the largest annual population change since July 2020. The nation gained more than 3.3 million people during this time period, growing by 1.0% to 340,110,988.
However, when comparing the vintage 2023 July 1, 2023 population estimate for Colorado, the year-over-year population change is 79,883, or a 1.4% increase.
Due to changes in international immigration to the United States in 2022 and 2023, the Census Bureau Population Estimates Program modified the methodology for tracking net international migration. Nationally, the differences in methodology increased the amount of net international migration in 2022 by 70%, and in 2023 by 102%. For Colorado, the difference in methodology changed the net international migration for July 2022 by 44%, and for July 2023 by 56%.
The estimate of net international migration for Colorado from July 2023 to July 2024 was 32,200, which is higher than the annual average of 10,000 during the last decade. Domestic, or interstate migration, was estimated at 5,400, which is slightly lower than the past few years, and considerably lower than the annual averages of 40,000 from last decade. International and domestic net migration was 38,900 between 2023 and 2024, and accounted for 69% of the state’s total population change.
Births in Colorado were 62,500, similar to last few years but still lower than the peak of 70,700 in 2007. Births are the largest component of population change in Colorado. There were 45,200 deaths between July 2023 and July 2024, down about 4,000 from the peak in 2021-2022. Natural change (births minus deaths) was 17,300, about the same as last year. Despite the lower levels of natural increase, Colorado had the 7th largest natural increase in the country.
Colorado remains the 21st largest state by population. The state’s population change from July 2023 to July 2024 ranked it 19th in total annual change and 17th in annual percentage change among all states and the District of Columbia. Colorado’s growth rates for each year from 2020 to 2023 were higher than the nation’s, and comparable for 2023 to 2024.
The Census Bureau will release county estimates in March and municipal population estimates in May.
