2024 State Demography Summit Registration opens September 16
The State Demography Summit is a one-day conference that offers attendees the opportunity to learn about the most current population and economic estimates and forecasts for the state, its regions, counties, and municipalities.
This year’s summit will occur on Friday, November 1, at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd, Arvada, CO 80003
This year’s Summit will feature presentations on:
- Updates to Colorado’s Population Estimates: Where have we seen recent growth
in the state and what is driving it? And some new methods to derive important demographic variables.
- State and Regional Economic Trends: National and state trends and where is job
growth expected in the state and what is influencing regional changes?
- Population Forecasts: Over the next ten years, Colorado's population will continue
to grow, age, and diversify. Join us as we walk through the changes and explore the impacts of slowing growth and a changing age distribution on long-term household and labor force growth.
- Preparing for Census 2030: Census 2026 test in Colorado Springs and
Questionnaire changes.
- Unlocking Insights: New SDO Tools, Applications, and Enhancements to SDO
American Community Survey Spreadsheets.
- Age in Colorado: From K12 and the labor force to health care and housing and the
economy, - How is Age Impacting Colorado?
Registration for this year's summit cost $55.00 per person for in-person registration and $25.00 per person for live stream registration. State of Colorado Employees will receive complementary registration to the summit live stream.
Continuing education credits will be available for Real Estate Appraisers and Real Estate Brokers.
Registration for this year's summit will open on September 16, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. and close on October 25, 2025 at 5:00 p.m.

Colorado State Demographer Elizabeth Garner Announces Retirement After Two Decades of Service
After two decades of dedicated service, Elizabeth Garner, Colorado's State Demographer, has announced her retirement effective November 29, 2024. Garner’s work and commitment have significantly shaped the state’s demographic understanding and planning, leaving an indelible mark on Colorado’s development.
Since joining the Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) in 2004, Garner quickly established herself as a leading expert in population trends, demographics, and their impact on Colorado’s economy, infrastructure, and social services. Her invaluable insights have been instrumental in shaping public policy and informing critical decision-making across various sectors.
“Elizabeth's contributions to the State of Colorado are immeasurable,” said Maria De Cambra, Executive Director of DOLA. “Her deep knowledge, commitment, and passion for understanding our state's demographic landscape have left a lasting legacy. We thank her for her years of service to our great state.”
Garner's career highlights include:
- Population Projections: Garner’s accurate projections and analyses have been vital for planning in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic development.
- Data-Driven Policy: She made demographic data accessible, guiding public policy, economic strategies, and community planning statewide.
- Public Engagement: Garner educated the public and officials, delivering over 800 presentations on Colorado's demographic changes and its impact.
- Census Leadership: Garner led Colorado’s Census efforts in 2010 and 2020, ensuring accurate counts and effective outreach
- Economic Insights: Her demographic analysis has supported workforce and economic development initiatives, identifying key trends and challenges.
“Working as Colorado's State Demographer has been an incredible honor,” Garner stated. “I am proud of what we have achieved together and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the understanding and planning for Colorado’s demographic and economic future. I look forward to seeing how the collaborations continue to evolve and how the state continues to thrive.”
While Garner is stepping down from her role, she will continue her work in demographic and economic analysis and spend more time traveling and volunteering with organizations that align with her interests, further contributing to the community in meaningful ways.

2023 American Community Survey 1-Year data release
The Census Bureau released the 2023 American Community Survey 1-Year data on September 12, 2024. This data release provides tables summarizing demographic and social characteristics for the nation, states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, congressional districts, metropolitan areas, and counties and places with a population of 65,000 or more.

Median Household Income Increased in 2023 for First Time Since 2019
Real median household income rose to $80,610 in 2023, the first annual increase since 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report released on Tuesday. The report, Income in the United States: 2023, compares median household income by different characteristics, including race and Hispanic origin, and shows that not all groups had an increase in median household income from 2022 to 2023.
