June spotlight: Colorado adds paid leave for parents with babies in intensive care
A newborn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is one of the most emotional, exhausting moments a parent can face — and in that moment, no one should have to ask: Can I afford to be here?
Thanks to a new law, Colorado parents with babies in the NICU won’t have to choose between a paycheck and being present. Colorado is set to become the first state in the country to support parents with newborns receiving intensive care with additional paid leave.
- Colorado’s FAMLI Program currently gives working parents up to 12 weeks of partial pay replacement when they have a new child. The new law means that parents of babies in the NICU don’t have to give up any of their 12 weeks of bonding time while their newborns are being treated.
- Last year an estimated 61,000 Colorado workers took paid leave to bond with a new child. A projection prepared for Colorado lawmakers anticipated that 10% of these workers — some 6,300 Colorado parents — will use the new type of NICU leave by next fiscal year, with an average NICU stay of 14 days.
The FAMLI Division is already hard at work crafting details about how parents can file for and receive paid neonatal leave. Coloradans can expect to see public hearings and discussion about the details this summer and fall. Keep watching our website to make sure you have all the latest information about this milestone leave type!

The health care industry changes quickly. Make sure to keep FAMLI updated!
We know that the health care industry is no stranger to mergers, acquisitions, and name and ownership changes.
But we don’t know when your practice’s contact information in the My FAMLI+ portal is out of date.
That’s why we need your help! Don’t forget to update your information in the My FAMLI+ portal as soon as possible when your practice information changes. This will ensure that your patients do not experience any delays in getting the FAMLI benefits they’re paying for and deserve.
