New research shows paid family and medical leave a powerful recruitment tool for businesses
Colorado’s employers are essential partners in statewide paid family and medical leave benefits. New research shows that employers may also benefit from paid leave programs because paid leave attracts top talent in skilled fields.
According to a national survey of radiologists published last month, radiologists think paid family and medical leave is an important factor when choosing a practice. More than 400 radiologists told researchers that they consider paid-leave policies when evaluating career moves.
“Recognition and support for this issue is growing across the United States, which is reflected in our surveyed population, with most respondents citing [paid family medical leave] as an important factor when evaluating a job or training opportunity,” researcher Dr. Kirti Magudia of Duke University wrote.
Radiologists said they were more likely to have access to paid family leave if they worked for academic institutions, hospitals or large practices. Radiologists at smaller practices were less likely to have access to paid family and medical leave.
Colorado’s FAMLI program covers virtually all employees, no matter how small the business. Employers with nine or fewer employees can offer FAMLI benefits without contributing any premiums themselves, making the program a powerful recruitment tool for small businesses previously unable to compete with larger employers for valued benefits like paid family and medical leave.
