January spotlight: FAMLI’s first anniversary
The FAMLI Division is marking the first anniversary of benefits payments under the nation’s first voter-enacted paid-family-leave program. As of Jan. 1, 2025, $689,182,044 has been sent to more than 128,000 approved FAMLI claims.
Colorado has the only paid-leave law in the nation that was approved by voters! Colorado also stands alone in having an online portal for health care providers to verify claims without filing physical paperwork.
Here are some more statistics about the first year of FAMLI benefits:
-
52.8 days = average leave duration for Colorado workers taking continuous leave
-
46.6% = percentage of submitted FAMLI claims to care for one’s own serious health condition (79,241)
-
33.7% = percentage of submitted FAMLI claims to bond with a new child (57,290)
-
$914.65 = average FAMLI payment
-
96.2% = FAMLI claimants who filed their claims using the State’s My FAMLI+ online portal

Providers are asking: Can I certify claims virtually?
Yes! The FAMLI Division relies on licensed health care providers like you to certify certain types of leave. But the FAMLI Division does not regulate how health care providers administer care for their patients.
In other words, if you are comfortable completing required FAMLI documentation based on a virtual visit, that is acceptable to the FAMLI Division. Each provider (or delegated staff member) is responsible for certifying serious health condition forms using their license number.
(Remember that FAMLI rules do not allow a health care provider to certify a serious health condition for themselves or for a family member or for a condition that is outside of their diagnostic scope.)
If you have any questions about a pending FAMLI certification request, give yourself a refresher with our step-by-step video on certifying patient conditions. We’ve also got a wealth of information in our FAMLI User Guide for Health Care Providers.

Include FAMLI in your after-visit summaries
After-visit summaries are super important for health care providers. They let patients know their next steps and give them crucial information about their health.
Now you can make those summaries even more valuable by letting your patients know about paid family and medical leave in Colorado. We encourage you to copy-and-paste the message below into your after-visit summaries:
Did you know that nearly all workers in Colorado now qualify for paid leave to take care of themselves or a loved one with a serious health condition? Pregnancy qualifies as a serious health condition, and both parents are eligible to take up to 12 weeks to bond with a new child. Find out more and get your claim started at famli.colorado.gov.
We also encourage you to print out our “What-Is-FAMLI” flyers in both English and Spanish. These flyers are a great introduction to FAMLI and will point your patients in the right direction to learn more.
