Coping With Holiday Stress
- The winter season, including holidays, comes with excitement as well as stress. Typical seasonal stressors include family conflict, grief related to recent or past losses, financial worries, and looming deadlines associated with year-end work duties.
- The “holiday blues” or seasonal stress is unique to the individual and can feel like anxiousness, worry, loneliness, sadness for times passed, and lack of excitement or joy for things to come. Consider the following tips and strategies as we settle into fewer daylight hours and expectations or pressures of the season:
- Financial stress is the primary stressor for most Americans. Know your budget before holiday shopping begins and spend only if you have extra funds available. Likewise, use credit cards only if you know you will be able to pay when the bill arrives. If holiday expenses, including extra spending on food, are not viable for your current budget, explain this to family and friends who may have expectations of gift giving during the season. If you are in need of food assistance during the holidays or throughout the year, contact United Way 211 Colorado.
- Consider the emotional energy available to you as a tank of fuel. Prevent yourself from “driving” until your tank is empty. Reserve your energy for the events and activities that are most important to you. If you are not up for an event or party - even if you believe there is expectation that you will attend - respectfully decline. Be sure to spend time on the people and activities that fill your emotional fuel tank. Holidays can bring downtime; use the downtime to recharge.
- Pay attention to increased food, alcohol, and other substance intake during the holiday season. Celebrate with indulgences that you will feel good about - physically and emotionally - later. Pay attention to behavior changes you or others around you experience when you consume alcohol, marijuana, or other substances. Track sleep impact related to substance use. While alcohol and marijuana may help you relax or fall asleep, both create restless and poor sleep quality throughout your sleep cycle.
