Colorado Information Analysis Center Director Kevin McElyea Completes Executive Leaders Program at Naval Postgraduate School
Centennial, Colo – Kevin McElyea, director of the Colorado Information and Analysis Center (CIAC), the state's fusion center, within the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM), recently completed the Executive Leaders Program at the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS) on August 11, 2023.
McElyea has served as director of the CIAC since 2018 and is a 30-year law enforcement veteran. In his role at the CIAC, McElyea oversees a team that collaborates with stakeholders and law enforcement agencies across the state to disseminate relevant actionable information, share resources and provide timely updates on national and regional trends and cases.
Additionally, he oversees several programs within the CAIC, including all-threats intelligence; Safe-2-Tell, an information sharing service for schools to identify potential threats; infrastructure protection; whole of state cyber and the Colorado Preventing Targeted Violence Program.
Prior to working for the Colorado DHSEM, McElyea worked as a captain for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, overseeing the special operations bureau and serving as high-risk incident commander for SWAT and ERT, while leading over 17 specialized units within the office. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Argosy University and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice Incident Management from Saint Leo University. He is a graduate of the Florida Sheriff’s Association Commanders Academy and holds several certifications for incident command and weapons of mass destruction response tactics.
Throughout the hybrid program, McElyea collaborated with homeland security officials from across the nation on current policy, strategy, and organizational design challenges. The NPS-CHDS students represent a snapshot of the homeland security enterprise, including professionals from the fields of emergency management, education, law enforcement, fire service, homeland security, public health, and city/county government.
