Male Found Deceased in Gully on 2nd Flatiron

Boulder County, Colo. - The Boulder County Communications Center received an Apple Crash Detection alert from an Apple device at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2026, originating from Chautauqua Park in the city of Boulder.

At the time of the alert, no additional information was available. First responders attempted to confirm the report and determine whether anyone was injured; however, no other calls were received from the area. Responders contacted multiple hikers and climbers nearby, none of whom reported seeing or hearing anything unusual.

Shortly afterward, an off-duty member of the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group who was climbing in the area also conducted a search. During that search, the rescuer located a deceased adult male in a gully approximately halfway up the Second Flatiron. Preliminary information indicates the male may have been solo scrambling, as no rope or climbing equipment was found at the scene.

The Rocky Mountain Rescue Group conducted the technical extrication.

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office is conducting an independent investigation to determine the cause and manner of death. The decedent’s name will be released following positive identification and notification of next of kin.

The following agencies assisted: Boulder County Sheriff's Office, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, and the Boulder County Coroner's Office.

The associated Boulder County Sheriff’s Office case number is 26-02218.
