Latine and Chicano Historic Context Study

Phase I Summary Released and Phase II Underway

We are excited to share an important milestone in the Latine and Chicano Historic Context Study: the completion of the Phase I Summary Report and the launch of Phase II.

Phase I focused on building a strong foundation for this work - centering community voice, establishing relationships, and beginning to reexamine Boulder County’s history through a Latine and Chicano lens. This phase laid the groundwork for a long-term, community-driven approach to documenting, honoring, and preserving the places where Latine and Chicano communities lived, worked, learned, worshipped, and gathered.

What We Accomplished in Phase I

During Phase I, the project team:

• Built trusted relationships with community historians, cultural brokers, and residents.

• Hosted a bilingual community kickoff event.

• Developed and translated outreach and engagement materials.

• Trained and supported Student Research Assistants in archival research, oral history methods, and historic context work.

• Began reexamining existing Boulder County landmarked sites through a Latine/Chicano historical lens.

• Identified emerging themes, sites, and stories to guide the next phase of research.

The Phase I Summary Report captures these efforts and highlights early findings, lessons learned, and priorities moving forward. Check back for the Spanish version!

Student Research Assistant Presentations As part of Phase I, Student Research Assistants presented preliminary findings focused on agriculture and education, including sites such as Las Barracas, Laber Farm, Longfellow–Pace Farm, Gooding School, and Pleasant View Ridge School. Their work surfaced important Latine and Chicano histories that have often been missing from existing landmark narratives. Watch It Now

What's Next

Phase II

Phase II (February - August 2026) will deepen this work by:

• Expanding oral history collection and community storytelling.

• Establishing a Community Connectors Advisory Committee.

• Continuing archival and site-based research.

• Drafting the Latine and Chicano Historic Context Report.

• Returning findings to the community through public presentations and engagement.

This next phase is about moving at the speed of community, strengthening trust, and ensuring the final historic context reflects lived experience, dignity, and accuracy.

Committee members help guide the project by sharing community knowledge, identifying important sites and stories, and ensuring this work remains grounded in lived experience and trust.

Nos emociona compartir un logro importante en el Estudio de Contexto Histórico Latine y Chicano: la finalización del Informe Resumen de la Fase I y el inicio de la Fase II.

La Fase I se centró en construir una base sólida para este trabajo: poner la voz de la comunidad en el centro, establecer relaciones y comenzar a reexaminar la historia del Condado de Boulder desde una perspectiva Latine y Chicana.
