Medicare Open Enrollment Appointments are Limited
Boulder County's Medicare Counselors have limited appointments left for this year's open enrollment period. Our online appointment system will be down until Monday, Dec. 8. If you have already called our team, they will be returning your call as they work through them as they were received. If you need help during open enrollment to review your options for 2026, we encourage you to call 1-800-MEDICARE.
Medicare’s annual open enrollment runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. During this time, people on Medicare can review and change their prescription drug plans (Part D) or Medicare Advantage plans (Part C). This is the only time of year to make these changes. Plans may raise or lower their costs, change what they cover, or switch which pharmacies they work with. Reviewing your current plan can help you find better coverage and save money in 2026.

The Boulder County Area Agency on Aging (BCAAA) Caregiver Initiative is focused on empowering and supporting caregivers of older adults. Learn more about what we offer at boco.org/Caregiving.
Budget Cut Impacts
Due to budget cuts, the Boulder County Area Agency on Aging (BCAAA) Caregiver Initiative program has been discontinued as of Dec. 15, 2025. As a result, the Caregiving Corner and the Dealing with Dementia class will also end.
We recognize this change may be difficult for many caregivers. Please know this decision does not reflect the value of caregivers or the importance of the services previously provided. Rather, it reflects the current financial challenges and the county’s need to maintain long-term fiscal stability.
The BCAAA continues to provide information, referrals, resources, and have one on one conversations with caregivers of adults 60+ and caregivers of those living with dementia. You can connect with us by calling 303-441-1617.
"It has been a pleasure working with caregivers in our community over the years. You do important work; and wherever you are on this path, please remember that you are doing something profoundly meaningful." - Rebekah van Sweden, Lead Caregiver Program Resource Specialist
Dealing with Dementia (Registration is at capacity)

To support local caregivers of people with dementia, we are offering this workshop, developed by the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving. The workshop provides effective strategies for dealing with dementia behaviors, providing tips and strategies for caregivers on best practices for caring for their loved ones and themselves. Caregivers who attend will receive a copy of Dealing with Dementia: A Caregiver’s Guide handbook which provides information and solutions to problems caregivers face every day.
When: Friday, Nov. 14, 1 - 5 p.m.
Where: 515 Coffman St., Longmont
Registration: The workshop is full but you can contact us to get on the waitlist at 303-441-3945 or infoCaregiver@bouldercounty.gov.

Ask a Caregiving Expert
Dear Caregiver Programs,
I NEED a BREAK from caregiving and don’t know where to turn. My friend told me there is something called “respite care” and suggested that I should apply. Can you please tell me more about this?
Signed, An Exhausted Caregiver
==
Dear Exhausted,
Nobody can function in any role 24/7 without a break. Yet, that’s what some family caregivers do. Taking time away from the immense responsibility of caring for a loved one seems like a luxury: hard to afford and nearly impossible to manage.
But can aging in place come at the cost of caregiver strain and burnout? Finding a way to take a brief respite is necessary for caregiver physical and mental health. Moreover, the care recipient receives benefit from having a better-rested, reinvigorated caregiver looking after them. See what short-term respite entails and how to find respite care.
What is Respite Care?
Respite care provides short-term relief for caregivers. It can be a few hours off, a weekend away, or a temporary stay in a care facility.
Types of Respite Care
-
Adult day services: Supervised care with meals, activities, and sometimes health services.
-
In-home care: Professional caregivers provide services in the home, ranging from basic help to overnight stays.
-
Assisted living stays: Short-term stays offer full support while caregivers are away.
-
Family or volunteer help: Friends, siblings, neighbors, or faith community groups step in to help.
-
Home health care: Certified aides offer care under a doctor’s order, sometimes covered by Medicare.
Any successful respite involves some planning and preparation to enjoy that period of comparative freedom and downtime.
Benefits of Respite Care
-
Caregivers get time to rest, attend appointments, or handle personal tasks.
-
Loved ones may enjoy a change of routine or new social interactions.
-
Respite care helps prevent burnout and improves overall caregiving quality.
Common Challenges
-
Trust issues: Some care recipients may resist new caregivers.
-
Cost barriers: Financial aid options are available but require research and can be limited in scope or time.
-
Finding the right fit: Ensure caregivers or facilities align with personal needs and preferences.
Respite Care Costs
Respite care can be expensive. While rates vary by type of care and location, these are average costs:
-
Adult day care: ~$100/day
-
Assisted living: ~$275-$485/day
-
In-home aide: ~$45/hour, often with 2 - 4 hour minimums
Who pays for respite care?
Before you feel the cost of respite care is too prohibitive, consider some of the following programs that are available to help you pay for respite care.
-
Medicaid waivers may help you pay for respite services. Go to healthfirstcolorado.com to learn more about how to access this benefit.
-
Department of Veterans Administration: Veterans and their dependents may qualify for benefits to pay for respite care. A home care agency should be able to help you through this process. Learn more about benefits for Veterans and their dependents by calling 303-441-3890 or emailing vso@bouldercounty.gov.
-
Medicare Advantage: Some Medicare Advantage plans may offer respite care or personal care services as a supplemental benefit.
-
(Original) Medicare: If your loved one has been diagnosed with any form of dementia, respite care may be available through the Medicare GUIDE program which provides about 72 hours of care annually. This program began in July 2025 and will continue for another seven years. Learn more about the Medicare GUIDE program here.
-
Private Agencies: Private funding is available through grant programs administered by organizations like Hilarity for Charity or Easter Seals.
How to Find Respite Care Near Me
These are good starting points for family caregivers seeking respite care and support:
Final Thoughts
Caregiving can often stretch past one episode to months and even years, particularly when dealing with dementia as the diagnosis. Most family caregivers don’t identify as caregivers, so oftentimes they don’t search for services like ‘respite’ until they are overwhelmed and stressed, at which time it becomes even more difficult to navigate due to limited emotional bandwidth. Don’t wait until the last moment.
We recommend that caregivers also look to their community for support for their loved ones - and for themselves. It might help to consider online communities like Caring Bridge or Caring Village where family members can all pitch in by signing up for particular tasks or timeslots, and social media pages that might offer ideas and a forum for commiseration and communication. Don’t forget your local Resource Specialist who can provide information and referrals.
