Boulder County Compost Facility Exploration - Feasibility Study Update

Phase 1 of the study nearing completion, phase 2 underway

Phase 1 of the Boulder County Compost Facility Feasibility Study is nearing completion. The project team will post the phase 1 study findings, along with the results of a related April community survey, later in July on the project webpage – www.BoCo.org/compost-facility. An announcement will be made via the project listserv when the results are online.

Phase 2 of the study, which is underway, will conclude in September. The phase 2 findings include finished compost end markets and financial analysis. The project team will publish the full study results as soon as they are finalized. We will announce their availability via this project listserv.

Phase 2 of the study includes site exploration. One of the sites it will review is the Distel Property which is owned by the City of Longmont. The exploration will look at the viability of the Distel site, which is located just north of Weld County Road 20 ½. Boulder County is partnering with the City of Longmont in considering this site to advance each organization’s waste diversion goals. Learn more about this site and the city’s potential land exchange process on the City of Longmont’s webpage. The county has examined other unincorporated county sites, but the feasibility study will not specifically list these locations. The feasibility study will primarily focus on the Distel site. Previously explored unincorporated county sites will not be disclosed in order for the county to maintain a competitive negotiating position on the best possible value of the land for the public should the county decide to move forward with potential purchase in the future. Any final decision and location of any property acquisition would be made public before any Board of County Commissioner decision.

Anticipated Project Timeline

  • July – Boulder County will publish the Feasibility Study Phase 1 Report
  • September – Boulder County will publish the full Feasibility Study Report
  • September through November – Boulder County will host community meetings to share Feasibility Study findings and gather feedback

Updates will be provided at each project milestone and details of all public meeting opportunities will be shared as dates, times, and locations are known. Visit www.BoCo.org/compost-facility to learn more about this project and to read study results as they are published.
