Medicare fraud is a serious problem. Medicare loses an estimated $60 billion each year to fraud, errors, and abuse. Every day, these issues affect people across the country and can lead to identity theft and cost you money. The good news? Some simple tips can help you protect yourself and those you love.
Watch for warning signs of a scam.
- Unsolicited calls, emails, or visits – someone contacting you out of the blue, claiming to be from Medicare and offering free services.
- Requests for personal information – a demand for your Medicare number, Social Security number, or other personal information.
- Pressure to act quickly – any threat that you'll lose benefits or face other consequences if you don't comply with a deadline, often by paying or providing personal information.
- Billings with errors – charges for services or supplies that weren’t ordered, were never received, or that Medicare already covered.
- Suspicious websites or mailings – fake websites created to look like official ones but that have inconsistencies, errors, or other odd elements.
Ask for help.
If you have questions about how to protect yourself, need to report fraud, or want help determining whether you’ve been a victim, Boulder County’s Medicare Counseling Program can help. We provide free, unbiased, one-on-one assistance to Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers. Our team members teach people how to prevent fraud, assist beneficiaries with billing errors and disputes, and help to report suspected fraud to the correct state and federal agencies.

Volunteer Visitors
(previously the Respite & Companion Volunteer Program)
is excited to announce our name change!
Volunteer Visitors provides social connection for older adults and a weekly break for caregivers.
Most of you have known our program as the Respite & Companion Volunteer Program, but exciting changes are happening. Our new name is an important part of that. The Volunteer Visitor Program still provides meaningful social connection matching dedicated community volunteers for two-hour weekly visits with older adults who live alone or with family caregivers - only now with a more descriptive name.
As always, our Volunteer Visitor Program invites adults 21 and older to apply to become Volunteer Visitors. Applicants must pass a criminal background check and make at least a six-month commitment.
If this opportunity speaks to you as a volunteer, someone in need of a visitor, or if you know an older adult who can benefit from a weekly volunteer visitor, please call 720-864-6526 or email the VolunteerVisitorProgram@bouldercounty.gov for more information.
Dementia Man: An Existential Journey
An event sponsored by Boulder Rotary Club’s Alzheimer’s/Dementia Initiative, and co-sponsored by Frasier and the Alzheimer’s Association of Colorado
Dementia Man, An Existential Journey, is the award-winning autobiographical story of a man who faces his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease by actor and playwright Samuel A. Simon. In this full-length theatrical piece, Simon takes the stage as a man facing his cognitive decline and asks the hard questions of what to do next in the face of what he calls “an existential journey.” It is a peek into the head and heart of the struggle with a broken medical system and a personal and family challenge. The play challenges the audience to imagine a meaningful future for the millions of people with neurocognitive disease, with accommodation and adaptation.
When: Saturday, June 8, 7 p.m. and Monday, June 10, 7 p.m.
Where: Frasier (350 Ponca Place – Canyons Center, Boulder)
Registration: Register here. Seats are limited. You must register to guarantee a seat.
