The objective of this project is to improve safety for motor vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians moving through this intersection. Current proposed improvements include:

  • Construction of an off-street bike box that will have the capacity to accommodate a queue of eight cyclists for those wanting to turn left onto northbound 61st Street from eastbound Valmont Road
  • Construction of a right-turn lane on southbound 61st Street which will improve vehicle circulation by separating right-turning from left-turning traffic at the intersection on southbound 61st Street
  • Construction of buffered, bikeable shoulders on 61st Street north of the intersection

The proposed improvements will provide an option for cyclists to turn from eastbound Valmont Road onto northbound 61st Street without having to move across the eastbound through-lane on Valmont. The southbound right-turn lane on 61st Street will improve traffic circulation by separating the right- and left-turning traffic on southbound 61st.

The current design-phase is anticipated to last through next summer and will be followed by construction in the fall of 2024.
