Long-Term Care 101

Presented by the BCAAA's Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program

The announced closing of Golden West assisted living this month was a big blow to older adult housing in our community.  It has been a long-time provider and pillar of older adult housing for over 30 years. Although it is the fourth assisted living to close or cancel their Medicaid contracts in the last year, it is especially devastating. These changes in availability of long-term care has highlighted the need for more awareness about how it all works. While the BCAAA cannot prevent these types of business decisions that impact our community, our agency and Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program each advocate for support of older adults. Our Long-Term Care Ombudsman program upholds the rights of residents in assisted livings and nursing homes.

"What is the difference between an assisted living and skilled nursing?"

"How do I pay for long-term care?"

"What is the role of an ombudsman?"

We should all know what options we have as we age and how to navigate them.

Join us on Tuesday, Feb. 7 from noon to 1:30 p.m. for an informational session about Long-Term Care, the Ombudsman program, and what we all need to know as we plan for our future.

Kudos to Our SHIP Certified Medicare Counselors

Each year, from Oct. 15-Dec. 7, people on Medicare can review and change their prescription drug plans (Part D) or Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C.) These plans can change their costs, coverage, providers and pharmacies, so it is important to review the current plan each year.

During Open Enrollment 2022, our 16 counselors conducted 1,081 total counselors sessions and spent 710 hours achieving this milestone.

Of the total counseling sessions, 966 were Boulder County residents. Our office also serves monolingual Spanish speakers throughout the state who need assistance in reviewing their Medicare options.

During Open Enrollment 2022, SHIP Medicare Counselors saved Boulder County Medicare consumers over $240,000 for 2023 prescription drug costs!

Kudos to our Medicare Counselors, both staff and volunteer:

SNAP Maximum Allotments to End

Colorado Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) households have been getting an extra amount of benefits each month during the COVID-19 pandemic. These extra benefits are called "Emergency Allotments" or "Maximum Allotments" and most households have been getting this on top of their regular SNAP benefits. These allotments were authorized by Congress, but will be discontinued at the end of Feb. 2023. With this new change, SNAP households will see a reduction in monthly benefits to the pre-pandemic amount.

If you would like to share your SNAP story, we would love to hear from you. Call 303-441-4995.
