Happy Older Americans Month, Boulder County!

oam_1

This month, we join with municipalities in Boulder County and aging leaders across the nation to celebrate Older Americans Month (OAM). This year's theme, "Communities of Strength," highlights the resilience and strength of communities across America.

In tough times, communities find strength in people—and people find strength in their communities. In the past year, we’ve seen this time and again across Boulder County as friends, neighbors, and businesses have found new ways to support each other.

In our community, older adults are a key source of this strength. Through our experiences, successes, and difficulties, we have built resiliency that helps all of us face new challenges. When communities tap into this, they become stronger too.

Each May, the Administration for Community Living leads the celebration of OAM. This year’s theme is Communities of Strength, recognizing the important role older adults play in fostering the connection and engagement that build strong, resilient communities.

Here are some ways to share and connect during OAM:

  • Look for joy in the everyday: Celebrate small moments and ordinary pleasures by taking time to recognize them. Start a gratitude journal and share it with others via social media, or call a friend or family member to share a happy moment or to say thank you.
  • Reach out to neighbors: Even if you can’t get together in person right now, you can still connect with your neighbors. Leave a small gift on their doorstep, offer to help with outdoor chores, or deliver a homecooked meal.
  • Build new skills: Learning something new allows us to practice overcoming challenges. Take an art course online or try a socially distanced outdoor movement class to enjoy learning with others in your community. Have a skill to share? Find an opportunity to teach someone, even casually.
  • Share your story: There’s a reason storytelling is a time-honored activity. Hearing how others experience the world helps us grow. Interviewing family, friends, and neighbors can open up new conversations and strengthen our connections.

When people of different ages, backgrounds, abilities, and talents share experiences—through action, story, or service—we help build strong communities. And that’s something to celebrate!

On Tuesday, May 4, 2021, the Board of County Commissioners proclaimed the month of May, Older Americans Month. Check out the official proclamation language below.

WHEREAS, Boulder County is home to more than 65,000 older adults who make countless contributions to our community every day; and

WHEREAS, Boulder County is stronger when people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds are included and encouraged to share their stories of resilience; and

WHEREASBoulder County residents have come together during this difficult time to protect people of all ages as we fight this pandemic together; and

WHEREAS, we work to communicate about aging and older adults to help foster an age-friendly community that benefits all residents as we age; and

WHEREAS, Boulder County can foster communities of strength by:

  • engaging the community in anti-ageist discussion and work;
  • creating opportunities to celebrate the resilience of our beautiful community;
  • engaging older adults through programming that supports physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being; and
  • connecting people across age and social constructs with opportunities to share their time, experience, and talents.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of County Commissioners of Boulder County do hereby proclaim May 2021 to be Older Americans Month, recognizing the national theme, Communities of Strength. We urge every resident to take time during this month to recognize those of us who are older and the people who support older adults as essential contributors to the strength of our community.
