Hero's Journey of the Caregiver

caregiver

The Boulder County Area Agency on Aging invites interested caregivers to participate in the upcoming class, “Hero's Journey of the Caregiver.” This program is a ten-hour weekly course spanning five weeks and will begin this March. The course is intended for informal and family caregivers of older adults and will focus on providing participants with tools to help ensure that they thrive, not just survive, during caregiving.

The “Hero's Journey of the Caregiver” course is inspired by the work of Joseph Campbell, a scholar who popularized various theories on hero myth narratives. Using a multi-media approach (video clips, art, poetry, self-reflection, and discussion), the course will offer opportunities for the inner hero to show up in caregiving and ultimately move through obstacles on this journey. These classes span five weeks for two hours each, except for the opening day starting thirty minutes earlier (and ending at the same time as other classes) in order to assure ease with the online format. Registrants should be available to attend all five classes.

What: Hero’s Journey of the Caregiver

When: Tuesdays, March 16 to April 13 from 10 a.m.- noon (March 16, 9:30-noon)

Where: Virtually on Zoom

This program is open to Boulder County residents providing care for a relative, partner, or friend who is age 60 or over, or of any age if the person has dementia. There is no charge for the course, but donations are appreciated.

For more information or to register for the course, please contact Program Manager Rebekah Van Sweden at rvansweden@bouldercounty.org or by calling 303-441-3945. Participants will be required to provide additional eligibility details and to complete a registration form to participate.

An optional materials pick-up (masked, drive by) will be available before class. Date TBD.

BCAAA Ombudsmen Are Here to Serve

If you or a loved one lives in an assisted living or nursing home, you know that COVID-19 has dramatically impacted these homes, the people who live there, and their loved ones. Those of us who live in long term care are much more isolated. The BCAAA Long Term Care Ombudsman (LTCO) program is still active and serve as a resource to residents and loved ones of residents in long-term care. While LTCO are not physically in nursing homes and assisted livings, we are maintaining regular contact with those we serve, following all orders and regulations in place.

Know your rights - LTCO help residents resolve problems and ensure quality care and services.

Email us or give us a call at 303-441-1173 with any questions or concerns.

Thank you Medicare volunteers!

The Boulder County Medicare Program has 16 of the most amazing volunteers. Many of our volunteers are certified SHIP (State Health Insurance Program) Medicare Counselors. Several choose to serve in an administrative capacity. They are inquisitive, dedicated, and a fun group! Volunteers give their all to each beneficiary. 2020 was a challenge because our program had to learn the technology needed to provide virtual services, while continuing to understand and impact all of the continuing changes in health care regulations and rules. We could not serve the number of beneficiaries each year that we do without them. We are eternally grateful that they have chosen to spend some of their free time helping folks in Boulder County and beyond through our Medicare program.

Administrative Volunteers:

Joanna Ashmun & Senta Vagle

SHIP Certified Medicare Counselors:

Charles Bailey, Susan Benson, Donna Braun, Donna Burk, Prudence Carter, Kevin Cummings, Trish Devlin, Matt Henderson, Bob Jamieson, Gerra Lewis, Pat Marshall, Claudia Romans, Jan Sdao & Jo Walsh

With deep appreciation,

Maggie, Jean, & Karen

Meet Our Medicare Counselors

maggie

Join us in saying howdy to Maggie Benton! Maggie has served as a Medicare Counselor with Boulder County for over three years, but has been working with Medicare since 2013. As a former retirement planner, Maggie's interest in Medicare was due to the demands of the public seeking answers to prepare themselves for the ”big switch.” In 2021, Maggie hopes to significantly increase their personal produce donation to Longmont Food Rescue. Maggie's life activities are genealogy, working with St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church outreach, and growing dirt.

jean

Let's give Jean Hart a warm hello! Jean began serving as a Medicare Counselor in 2013. At the time, Jean was helping her father navigate Medicare. The process was so complicated at times that it drove Jean to want to learn more and help others navigate enrollment, as well as the use of their current benefits. In Jean's spare time, she enjoys walking their dogs, reading, painting, swimming, hiking, a great cup of coffee, and time with friends (pre - COVID).

karenh

Meet Karen Herrera. Karen has been serving as our bilingual Medicare Counselor since Nov. 2019. There are many aspects about being a Medicare Counselor that Karen enjoys. What brings her the most joy is helping someone understand aspects of Medicare that they once felt were daunting. In addition to being a counselor, Karen actively participates in outreach to Spanish-speaking older adults. One way Karen provides outreach and education is via Medicare Cafecitos, informational sessions about Medicare offered in Spanish tailored to the audience. Karen enjoys being with her family, growing flowers in her garden, and creating fairy gardens. Karen loves going on walks and being surrounded by nature.

jan

Get to know Jan Van Sickle. Jan has served as a Medicare Counselor for 11 years. According to Jan, this is 77 in regular counselor years! She was interested in becoming a Medicare Counselor due to her instinct to teach and satisfying her "research nerd tendencies." Outside of work, Jan enjoys watching her dogs do funny things - like pointlessly begging her to take them on walks. In 2021, Jan is looking forward to hugging people she likes again.

teresa

Leading our Medicare Counselors is Teresa Deanni, BCAAA's Healthy Aging Program Manager. Teresa is a SHIP Certified Counselor who helps teach classes and provides tremendous support to the Medicare Counseling Team.

March is National Nutrition Month!

eat right

Every March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics focuses attention on healthful eating through National Nutrition Month®. This year's theme, Personalize Your Plate, promotes creating nutritious meals to meet individuals' cultural and personal food preferences.

"America is a cultural melting pot, so you can't expect everyone's food choices to look the same," said registered dietitian nutritionist Su-Nui Escobar, a national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in Miami, FL. "Eating is meant to be a joyful experience. As supermarkets increasingly diversify their shelves to meet the needs of their customers, it's becoming easier to create nutritious meals that align with a variety of cultural preferences."

"Variety is the spice of life and that's how people should view their meals," Escobar said. Spice up your menus with the foods and flavors you enjoy and add new flavors to spark excitement in your cooking. "Developing healthful eating habits does not require drastic lifestyle changes. A registered dietitian nutritionist can help you incorporate the foods you enjoy into your life."

In Boulder County Adults age 60+ are eligible for a free (suggested donation) one-on-one nutrition counseling appointment. Call 303-678-6115 to set an appointment. View our nutrition wellness classes here.
