Rainbow Elders' Newsletter-October 2019

For Boulder County's LGBTQ+ older adults, their allies and the professionals who serve them

RC

Rainbow Connections

We are excited to share that the continuation of the pilot phase of our Rainbow Connections volunteer program to combat social isolation and create community for LGBTQ+ older adults in Boulder County is going well, with both recipients and volunteers reporting less isolation and more connection to community. Volunteers are currently matched with recipients in need of phone and/or in-person connection from another LGBTQ+ or allied community member. We look forward to growing the program, and toward that goal are hiring and training another round of volunteers this month. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please apply here. If you are interested in being matched with a volunteer, please contact Michael Chifalo at mchifalo@bouldercounty.org.

Project Visibility

A three-hour Project Visibility general training will be offered on Thursday, Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Longmont Senior Center, at 910 Longs Peak Avenue in Longmont. The Boulder County Area Agency on Aging's Project Visibility is a dynamic, cultural-sensitivity training that addresses the particular needs and strengths of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Plus (LGBTQ+) older adults. Award-winning, and one of the first of its kind in the nation, the training features a documentary that highlights the experiences of local LGBTQ+ older adults. Project Visibility offers important information, perspectives, and practical tips for working competently with this often invisible population for all caregivers, and others engaged or interested in the lives of older adults. Free and open to the public, but registration required. To register, email Michael Chifalo at mchifalo@bouldercounty.org or call 303-441-4518 by Wednesday, October 9. To watch a short video and learn more, visit here.
