Prescribed burn scheduled for this week at Ron Stewart Preserve at Rabbit Mountain

If weather conditions allow, 35 acres will be burned between Nov. 15-18.

Boulder County, Colo. - Boulder County Parks & Open Space and the Sheriff’s Office Wildland Fire Management Program plan to complete a prescribed burn at Ron Stewart Preserve at Rabbit Mountain as early as Thursday, Nov. 15.

On Oct. 25, fire crews burned 40 acres of the 75-acre South Dowe Flats project area. If weather conditions allow, the remaining 35 acres will be burned sometime between Nov. 15-18. The South Dowe Flats property is located on N. 55th St. approximately one mile north of Highway 66. The prescribed burn will not affect any trails at Ron Stewart Preserve, so the park will remain open during fire operations. (Ron Stewart Preserve Prescribed Burn Area Map).

In addition, two agriculture properties may be burned as part of a wildland fire training between Nov. 16-18. These properties include Wambsganss (N. 119th St. and Niwot Rd.) and Wittemyer Ponds (N. 119th St. and Mineral Rd.)

Smoke and flames may be visible for days to weeks following a prescribed burn. There may be heavy smoke in the air. Please do not call 911 since a prescribed burn is not an emergency. The areas will be monitored to ensure fires are completely out.

Smoke from prescribed fires may affect health. The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment Wood Smoke and Health website and the Boulder County Public Health Wildfire Air Quality & Health website provide tips on how to protect health from smoke.
