Boulder County Resident Named Colorado CDC Childhood Immunization Champion
Boulder County, Colo. - A local Boulder County resident, Lindsay Diamond, has won the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2018 Childhood Immunization Champion Award. The national award recognizes individuals who make a significant contribution toward improving public health through their work in childhood immunization.
Diamond has been a parent advocate for childhood vaccines among parents and public health professionals in Colorado since 2015. Holding a Ph.D. in molecular biology, she has helped to translate the science of immunization into plain language to help parents understand the importance of vaccination and approach the issue with an open mind. She even gave a TEDx Talk on how understanding risk can help parents make the decision to vaccinate their children.
Diamond is the co-founder of Community Immunity, a parent-driven organization working to inform the Boulder County community about immunizations and advocate for immunizations at the local level. She has also worked with the Boulder County Public Health Immunization Program and local health care partners to address low vaccination rates.
“Lindsay leverages her science background to make the science of vaccinations understandable and approachable for everyone,” said Dr. Indira Gujral, Boulder County Public Health Communicable Disease and Emergency Management division manager. “Her advocacy, leadership, and collaboration are helping to transform our community's attitudes and beliefs.”
Even though immunization rates have risen in Boulder County in recent years, they are still lower than levels needed to protect vulnerable residents, such as the very young, elderly, or those with compromised immune systems.
