CU Students Stuck on Flatiron While Climbing

Two CU Students Rescued After Getting Stuck Climbing

Boulder County, Colo. -

On Friday, October 12th, 2018 at approximately 6:00pm, the Boulder County Regional Communications Center received a report of two hikers who had become stranded on the First Flatiron in Chautauqua Park, Boulder County, Colorado. The two CU students decided to climb the First Flatiron wearing tennis shoes, shorts, and t-shirts (no climbing gear). Uninjured, they became stuck just to the north of the Direct East Face route about 2/3 of the way up. A climber in the area of the First Flatironette heard them calling for help and called 911.

At 18:01, City Open Space and Mountain Parks, Boulder Sheriff's Department and the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group were paged to respond to the incident. Members of the RMRG repelled to the stuck individuals and assisted them in climbing to the top of the climb and exiting the rock. The rescue, from page out to the victims being out at the Bluebell Shelter took approximately two hours and 40 minutes.
