James Canyon Project Suspension 

Hello -

Work on the James Canyon/James Creek Flood Recovery & Restoration Project has been going well and remains on schedule. The traffic signal at the retaining wall construction site below town has been removed. Flaggers will still be used at this location as crews work on finishing up the structure. The only signal that remains is above town at Little James Creek where crews have been working to finish the last major culvert by tying in the wingwalls. Crews continue working on building rockeries (stacked boulder walls) throughout the canyon. This work also required flagging operations in certain places. Rockery structures are designed to help protect stream banks and minimize erosion in high-water events.

After work is completed at Little James Creek and the wall below town is substantially finished (minus the paving), Kelley Trucking will suspend operations until temperatures are consistently warm again, most likely the end of April. They've completed all major structures and stream work, so almost all that is left to do is rebuild the road itself. Completing this work will go much smoother and will be much safer when temperatures are warm, as paving should only be done when the weather remains consistently above 50 degrees. We can pave in colder weather, but the final product is not as strong and durable.

Here's what you can expect to see when crews return in the spring:

• Removal of asphalt - Approximately 1 month (May)
• Rebuilding and regrading of the subsurface of the road - Approximately 1 month (June)
• Repaving, restriping, resigning - Approximately 1 month (July)

There will also be revegetation work taking place throughout the spring and summer.

I'll provide more details about how KTI plans on tackling the roadway's reconstruction before they return to work in the spring.
