Respite and Companion Volunteers are Making a Huge Difference
Our Respite and Companion Volunteer Program (RCVP) matches volunteers with older adults who are experiencing social isolation or health challenges. Volunteers visit their matches two hours per week, providing companionship to their program partner and a break to the family caregiver. We recently conducted a survey of program participants and learned:

100% of respondents said the visits helped maintain or improve their emotional well-being.
93% of caregivers report feeling reduced stress as a result of the volunteers visits.

One participant said, “you don’t always make a best friend like this in old age.”

RCVP tracy john

The RCVP program recently partnered with Boulder County Parks & Open Space staff to offer a field trip to the Agricultural Heritage Center in Longmont. People got to know each other at lunch, and during the tour visited the farm animals and saw the insides of the historical buildings. One of the older adults used to live on a farm, and was very excited to see the antique farm equipment, and various antique kitchen tools in the house. The RCVP volunteers appreciated this much-needed opportunity for social interaction.

Senior Law Day a Success!

2017 SLD

The 8th annual Boulder County Senior Law Day on September 23rd  was a success, providing older adults with valuable legal information and resources.  Attendees were able to access over 20 workshops on a variety of legal topics and had the opportunity to meet one on one with local attorneys.  Attendees enjoyed lunch and left with the Senior Law Handbook to refer back to when needed.  Keep your eye out for similar informational opportunities for older adults in our community in the future.

We Honor and Recognize Caregivers

NFC theme

National Family Caregivers Month, observed each November, is a time to honor family caregivers. The theme for this year is “Caregiving Around the Clock”, and calls attention to the fact that caregiving often is a 24-hours a day/ 7-days a week job. Did you know...
• The average family caregiver is a working mother with school-aged children.
• 70% of the time, the family caregiver manages the medications.
• Six out of 10 family caregivers work full- or part-time in addition to juggling their caregiving responsibilities at home.
Yes, caregiving can be a full-time-plus job, and we honor the dedicated caregivers who do their best to manage the many demands on their time. If you are a family caregiver who faces these kinds of challenges, please don’t hesitate to contact us for information about helpful resources and support.
