Toddler nearly drowns in Hygiene

A 19-month-old child was found in a pool at a residence; the child was rescued and taken to a local hospital

Hygiene, Colo. - This afternoon, just before 1:30 p.m., the Boulder County Communications Center received a 911 call from a residence in the 7400 block of Rozena Drive about a possible drowning. The caller stated that a small child had been discovered in a pool. The child had been rescued from the pool by family members, but was reportedly not breathing.

Members of the Hygiene Fire Protection District and AMR Ambulance responded to the scene along with sheriff's deputies. The first two rescuers on scene performed CPR on the child, but stopped a short time later when a pulse was located. The 19-month-old toddler was subsequently transported to the hospital by ambulance for further treatment and evaluation.

The circumstances on how the child entered the pool security enclosure at the home are not known, but it is believed that the toddler was in the water no longer than one or two minutes at most.

Deputies are continuing their investigation at the scene, but all indications suggest nothing more than an accident occurred. The toddler does not live at the home but was there with his parents and other family members for a barbeque.

The case number associated with this investigation is 17-2770.
