Lefthand Canyon ribbon cutting ceremony Friday, Dec. 16

Boulder County, Colo. - Boulder County will host a ribbon cutting ceremony from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16 to mark the upcoming completion of permanent flood recovery-related repairs to Lefthand Canyon Drive and Left Hand Creek. The event will be held at Buckingham Park, which is located at the intersection of Lefthand Canyon Drive and Olde Stage Road. This is the latest permanent flood recovery and creek restoration project to be finished by the county. All are welcome to attend.

Boulder County Commissioners, Transportation staff, and members of the project design and construction team will be on hand to help celebrate the opening of this critical mountain link for residents and visitors.

The project involved reconstruction of approximately 10-miles of roadway and restoration of multiple segments of Lefthand Creek, which were both devastated by the 2013 Flood. The 12-month project cost approximately $19.3 million to construct and is eligible for federal reimbursement. Boulder County partnered with Central Federal Lands (CFL), a division of the Federal Highways Administration, to expedite the work. CFL retained Kelley Trucking, Inc. as the project’s general contractor. Both project partners did an outstanding job rebuilding this important county corridor.

Project highlights:

  • Four new bridges and four new major culverts that can convey 100-year flood events
  • Complete roadway repaving of the entire length of the project
  • Improved hillside drainage that will greatly protect the roadway during major rain events
  • Restoration of several miles of Left Hand Creek to improve the local ecosystem and wildlife habitat and protect the road
  • Several new retaining walls using native Lefthand Canyon rock
  • Creekside slope stabilization and protection
