Wildfire and Forestry Open House at Walker Ranch Oct. 1

Event Kicks Off October Wildfire Awareness Month

Boulder County, Colo.October Wildfire Awareness Month will kick off with a Connecting the Community to Public Lands Open House on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at Walker Ranch, Meyers Gulch Trailhead, located at 7250 Flagstaff Road, Boulder.

Are you prepared for a wildfire? What does a healthy forest look like? Would you like to talk to firefighters and learn what to expect during a wildfire event?

Representatives from Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Fire Management Program, Rocky Mountain Fire District, Boulder County Parks & Open Space, and the Wildfire Partners program will be available to discuss a wide range of wildfire and forestry topics including:

  • Fire suppression
  • Prescribed fire
  • Open burn permits
  • Current and future Parks & Open Space wildfire mitigation projects
  • What steps homeowners can take to reduce the risk of losing their home to a wildfire
  • Rocky Mountain Fire District will have a water tender, a large water truck, on site and talk about the importance of community water sources.

Communication, coordination, and collaboration among homeowners, firefighters, and public land managers are the keys to preparing communities for future wildfires.

In 2011, on the one year anniversary of the Fourmile Canyon Fire, Boulder County declared October as Wildfire Awareness Month. Activities during the month teach residents about wildfires and wildfire mitigation and encourage homeowners to take action to prepare for future fires. The idea for the month came from citizens of Boulder County who understood the need for more education, improved programs, additional resources, stronger community involvement, and greater individual responsibility to realize the potential of community wildfire protection.
