Look Out! Falls Change Lives
We're coordinating more than 40 events around the county as part of the National Falls Prevention Week: going on now! Attend a class or seminar to learn how you can reduce your risk of falling. For more information and a full calendar of events, visit our website, or contact Melissa at mpruitt@bouldercounty.org. A Little Help Goes a Long Way Our Aging and Disability Resources for Colorado (ADRC) team recently had the opportunity to assist mountain resident "Kevin". Kevin was referred to our ADRC staff when he very abruptly had to find a new apartment after a 42% rent increase by his landlords. In the intervening weeks, ADRC Options Counselors provided Kevin with information and assistance including referrals to storage facilities and assistance with an application for a senior residence in Boulder. According to Kevin, their guidance and suggestions allowed him to "focus on practical realities without panicking." Kevin is now settling into his new apartment in Boulder making new friends, and once again relishing the "security of a fixed abode." Know someone who needs to be connected to resources? Did you know that people with poor oral health are much more likely to have poor general health? While the reported rate of fair-to-poor oral health for seniors in Boulder County is lower than the state average it is still a major issue. Our Dental Program, funded through a HCPF grant, supports critical dental care for individuals age 60 and over who are not eligible for dental services under any other programs. In the last year we provided dental assistance to more than 100 people across Boulder County, in partnership with 17 local dental providers and 11 entry points. Dental assistance is one of our largest requested services and because of this, the program fills up fast. But if you would like to be added to the program's waitlist, please let us know by calling our Resource Line at 303-441-1617. Learn more about the connections between oral health and overall health here. We're Out and About
Did you see us at Senior Law Day? More than 400 people attended the annual Senior Law Day event that featured 20 presentations, 50 vendor exhibits and 70 one-on-one sessions with lawyers. Many participants expressed their appreciation for this opportunity to learn and plan for potential legal issues in later life. Thanks to the many community agencies who participated in this collaborative event including the District Attorney's Office and the Longmont Senior Center. We were at Boulder Pride too! We partnered with the Rainbow Elders to host a lively booth at the Boulder Pride Festival on Sept. 11th. More than 100 folks stopped by to answer trivia questions and win prizes. Twelve community volunteers pitched in to support Nancy Grimes and Ash Bell, LGBT Program staff. For more information on our LGBT Programs visit our website. Connect With Us
