Update on the death investigation at the Boulder County Jail

The investigation into the death of a 29-year-old female inmate at the Boulder County Jail continues.

Boulder, Colo. The investigation into the death of a 29-year-old female inmate at the Boulder County Jail on Friday, May 27th, is continuing. The woman has not yet been identified by the Boulder County Coroner's Office. When the coroner's office has made positive identification they will publically release the woman's name.

Earlier today the Boulder County Commissioners held a regularly scheduled business meeting, which was open to members of the public. During the course of the hearing a man made a public comment to the commissioners that he had a female friend housed near the deceased woman's cell on the day of her death. According to the man, his female friend alleges she heard the deceased woman asking for help, but that a female deputy working the module disregarded the woman's request.

Sheriff Joe Pelle was informed of this allegation after the public hearing concluded and has provided the information to investigators. Prior to today's public hearing, no information from the on-going investigation has surfaced suggesting that the woman had asked, or was asking, for any type of help or assistance during her time in custody.

The woman had been booked into the Boulder County Jail midafternoon on Thursday, May 26th. Later that evening the woman complained of feeling ill, and as a result she was taken to a local hospital. The woman was examined and treated by doctors in the Emergency Department and was discharged from the hospital, returning to the jail just before midnight. Specific details of the woman's medical condition and complaint cannot be released at this time.

The Boulder County Jail maintains on-duty medical staff at all times to attend to the medical needs of inmates. When an inmate suffers or complains of an acute medical condition, they are transported to local hospitals for treatment and evaluation.
