Unattended Death Investigation at the Boulder County Jail

A 29-year-old female inmate was found unresponsive in her cell and was unable to be resuscitated.

Boulder, Colo. - Earlier this afternoon, at approximately 3:55 p.m., deputies located an unresponsive female inmate in her cell at the Boulder County Jail during a routine welfare check. The 29-year-old woman was housed alone in a cell in the Women's Module at the time she was discovered by staff. Sheriff's deputies immediately summoned medical and rescue personnel, and began to administer CPR and other life saving efforts in an attempt to resuscitate the woman. Rescue personnel worked for more than 30 minutes to revive the woman, but were unable to do so. The woman was pronounced dead just before 4:30 p.m.

The 29-year-old decedent had been booked into the Boulder County Jail on Thursday, May 26th, on felony theft charges and an out-of-county warrant for theft. The woman had last been checked on by deputies approximately 20 minutes before she was found unresponsive. The initial investigation suggests that the woman may have suffered from some type of medical issue, and there is no indication of foul play.

Investigators from the sheriff's office and the Boulder County Coroner's Office are jointly investigating the woman's death. The exact cause and manner of her death will be determined by the coroner's office once the investigation has been completed. The woman's name is being withheld until her family can be notified of her death.

The associated case number for this investigation is 16-3047.
