Prescribed Burn at Heil Valley Ranch Planned for March 16-26 Timeframe

Boulder County, Colo. -- Boulder County Parks & Open Space and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Wildland Fire Management Program plan to conduct a prescribed burn at Heil Valley Ranch Open Space sometime between now and March 26.

The first attempt planned for today, March 14, was cancelled due to high winds. A new start time could take place any day in the defined burn timeframe. Updates will be posted to the website and sent to the prescribed burn email list.

Heil Valley Ranch will be closed completely for up to ten days during active ignition operations. Specific areas will reopen as soon as it’s deemed safe to do so by fire personnel.

The Wapiti 2 prescribed burn totals 270 acres, and is located near the Wapiti, Ponderosa Loop and Wild Turkey Loop Trails. (Map)

To determine if conditions are suitable for ignitions, fire managers assess fuel moisture levels and continuously monitor current and projected weather forecasts. Weather considerations include wind, temperature, relative humidity and air quality. Conditions have to meet certain criteria in order for the prescribed burn to proceed.

Firefighting resources will completely surround the area during the duration of the prescribed burn, and will remain on-site until the fire is confirmed as being controlled by significant weather conditions or determined to be out. The project area is well contained by trails and roads.
