Boulder County, Colo. -- Parks & Open Space will host a community meeting about a winter hazardous fuels treatment project at Betasso Preserve. The community meeting will begin with a formal presentation about the helicopter logging operations, trail closures, and impacts to nearby residents and park visitors.

The department will thin 90 acres at Betasso Preserve beginning mid-January. This project will take place on county land adjacent to the City of Boulder's Betasso Water Treatment Plant. The primary goal is to reduce risk from catastrophic wildfires and to increase safe access for fire fighters.
This forest management project will reduce density of ponderosa pine by 50 to 70 percent, creating a mosaic of forest cover and open spaces.
The public will be able to see the logging operations from the main access road as they drive to open space, and from the Bummers Rock and Canyon Link trails.
There may be noise from chainsaws, helicopters, wood processing, and log trucks during project operations. Operations are weather-dependent and will only be conducted during daylight hours.
The hazardous fuels reduction treatment is planned as part of the Betasso Preserve Management Plan, and funded through a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant.
