Sept. 25, 2015 – (Boulder, Colo.) – On Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m. in the Commissioners’ Hearing Room, Boulder County will be presented with two Colorado Lottery 2015 Starburst Community Awards.
The first is an award for ranch preservation, using Lottery funds to help preserve Tolland Ranch. The conservation easement was completed this summer with support in-part from a Lottery-funded $700,000 Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant. (…more)
Tolland Ranch, a historic and scenic property located within the Roosevelt National Forest, is now preserved for all to enjoy the many recreational opportunities and natural beauty. Acquisition of the 3,400-acre easement will allow conservation of popular Nordic ski trails and significant wildlife habitats. The property is home to mountain lion, elk, mule deer, bear, moose, river otter, and wild turkeys as well as federally threatened or endangered species, including the Canada Lynx, Greenback Cutthroat Trout, and the southwestern willow flycatcher.

The second is an award for using Lottery funds to help build the Allenspark Playground. The park was completed in 2012 with support from a Lottery-funded Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant worth $89,959. Prior to the creation of the local park, Allenspark citizens would have to travel nearly 20 miles to the nearest playground. With help from Lottery proceeds, Allenspark now has their very own park that provides a safe, scenic, and convenient place for the local community to play. The park also features a half basketball court that doubles as an ice rink in the winter. (…more)
"We greatly appreciate the funding and collaboration of the Lottery-funded Great Outdoors Colorado program which allows us to help preserve critical land for future generations, and in this case, even build a playground for our youngest residents," said Boulder County Commissioner Chair, Deb Gardner.
The public is invited to attend the presentation of the awards at the Downtown Boulder County Courthouse, 3rd Floor, 1325 Pearl Street, Boulder. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
