Saturday: Explore Impact of Spanish Anza Expedition, 250 Years Later
The Spanish Anza Expedition from Sonora, Mexico, to San Francisco (with a hard turn at the marshy Delta) turns 250 this year.
A symposium Saturday in Pittsburg explores the Anza expedition's impact on indigenous communities and California's East Bay through poetry, readings from diaries, talks from expedition descendants, and thoughtful discussion. The symposium includes a panel on how to teach about the expedition and Spanish colonialism, moderated by Delta Protection Commission Program Manager Blake Roberts.
Tickets are $23.18 for students and seniors, and $33.85 general admission, and include a boxed lunch for those who purchase by Wednesday, April 8.
Learn more about the expedition through California and Arizona at the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail website.
New: an Online Map of the Delta
The Delta Stewardship Council has unveiled an online Delta atlas to help people understand exactly where the Delta's boundaries are (shown above: a version showing the Delta and Suisun Marsh, with the Delta Primary Zone shaded in tan).
"The atlas is our first attempt to make select location data for the Delta more accessible to the public," wrote Council Environmental Program Manager Dan Constable. "We considered including a range of additional data sets, but have kept it focused for now to provide a more straightforward user interface."
Current map options include city and county boundaries, Census designated places, legacy communities, designated floodways, public conservation lands, and more.
