The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine are hosting a hybrid workshop on Monday and Tuesday, January 13 and 14, at the Beckman Center in Irvine that will explore innovative ways that artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance climate science and support decision-making for resilience and mitigation. The Accelerating Climate Progress with AI: from Science to Action – A Workshop brings together experts from research, industry, philanthropic, and policy spaces to foster collaboration on AI to create more effective responses to climate risks. The California Data Collaborative, California Water Data Consortium, and California Water Efficiency Partnership will host an hour-long webinar covering protocols for the water industry related to data, infrastructure, and standards. Protocols in Practice: Building Better Data and Infrastructure Standards is designed to assist those curious about starting a data modernization project and those who may have already started. Speakers for this event include Patrick Atwater with The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and Timber Stinson-Schroff, who manages Summer of Protocols, a seasonal research program that supports the study of protocols in and across fields. This free event will be on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 11 a.m. Registration is required.

The first Lunch-MAR webinar of 2026 happens today at noon. The hour-long event will feature a presentation from White Pine Renewables focusing on co-locating solar on groundwater recharge basis, balancing ponds, and other water infrastructure. The Flood-MAR Network’s Estimating Recharge Action Team has created a Groundwater Recharge Estimation factsheet. The factsheet serves to provide landowners and groundwater sustainability agencies with some simple approaches for estimating recharge and for collecting data that will be most beneficial for improving those estimates of recharge moving forward. The factsheet presents recharge estimate options to employ and walks the reader through the recharge estimation process. The Flood-MAR Network strives to improve water availability, flood risk reduction, and groundwater recharge to sustain communities and ecosystems through Flood-MAR implementation.
