Rice Acreage Is Growing in the Delta. Why?
We explored how rice farming helps meet climate and ecosystem goals while supporting:
- Farmers' livelihoods - it is more profitable than corn.
- Farm viability - flooded rice halts the subsidence that raises catastrophic flood risk and renders some land unfarmable.
- The Delta's agricultural economy - loss of working farmland can hollow out the critical mass needed to maintain local farm services.
Farmland Conversion Impact Workshops: July 15, 17
The Delta Protection Commission has scheduled public workshops July 15 and 17 to hear about the impacts of farmland conversion for habitat and flood control projects on farmers, reclamation districts, and other affected parties.
The Delta Protection Commission is preparing a report to better understand the scale and impacts of these changes, and to offer practical, achievable recommendations to prevent negative impacts.
Input from these workshops will be included in the final report, “Delta Farmland Conversions: Water Supply, Flood Control, and Habitat Projects,” which is expected to be presented to the Delta Protection Commission in September.

Delta Stewardship Council Adopts Climate Adaptation Plan
The Delta Stewardship Council last week adopted the first regional climate adaptation plan for the Delta.
The plan, called "Delta Adapts: Creating a Climate Resilient Future," details strategies and actions across four focus areas: flood risk reduction, ecosystems, agriculture, and water supply reliability.

Rio Vista, Isleton Bridge Projects Conclude
Two Delta bridge projects that have led to periodic full closures have been completed by Caltrans.
The Rio Vista Bridge deck replacement project, which led to multiple weekend-long closures starting last October, wrapped up on June 23. Some items of remaining work, however, will cause single-lane traffic controls throughout the year.
A complete upgrade of mechanical and electrical systems on the Isleton Bridge, which led to 12-hour closures Mondays through Saturdays since November, wrapped up ahead of schedule on June 26.
