State honors Tribal sovereignty with new cultural burning law
The California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA) and the Karuk Tribe entered into a historic agreement as part of CNRA's and California Environmental Protection Agency's announcement that Senate Bill (SB) 310 (Dodd 2024) is now in effect. The law acknowledges federally recognized Tribes’ rights to conduct cultural burns without State permits and establishes a process for sovereign-to-sovereign agreements with CNRA or local air resources control boards. To help promote SB 310 awareness, the Karuk Tribe is teaming with the State to host a virtual webinar, “Advancing Tribal Stewardship Through Cultural Fire,” on Tuesday, April 1, from 1 to 2 p.m. Registration is required. More information about the webinar and cultural burns is available on the CNRA SB 310 webpage.
